The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has confered on Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger state as the grand patron of the union.
The NUJ National President, Chris Isuguzo performed the investiture and decorated the governor at the Council Chamber in Government House in Minna the state capital,
Comrade Isuguso explained that the title was in recognition of governor Bago’s transformation agenda in Infrastructure, education and healthcare sector since his assumption of office.
He urged him to sustain the tempo of performance especially in the areas of agricultural sector of the economy and to the convergence of leadership vision and unswerving commitment to the noble ideals that define journalism profession.
In his remarks, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago said the only way out of the current food crisis is to invest heavily in agricultural sector to ensure food security, hence his investment in special agri processing project in the state.
He called for censorship of the social media to avoid abuse of the social media that is causing disaffection in the society especially by youths hence the need to preach peace and unity of the country.
Bago than challenged journalists on objective reporting , adding that they should avoid inciting citizens against their leaders, however appreciated the NUJ for the honor as a farmer governor and assured not to disappoint the union.
He noted that the media as fourth Estate of the realm has contributed in shaping democracy in Nigeria and without the media the essence of democracy would have been defeated long ago.
Niger state chairman of NUJ Comrade Abu Nmadu applauded the governor for his laudable programs to enhance development of the state.
